Data Governance Program

The Data Governance Institute defines “data governance” as

...Have you experienced ‘analysis paralysis’ – as data has become more easily available, do you find that information is harder to come by?

Data Governance (DG) involves the people, processes, and technology necessary to create a consistent and appropriate transfer of an organizations data throughout the business enterprise. The reasons for implementing DG are usually related to adding value to the data, managing data complexity, reducing regulatory compliance risk, or minimizing security risks.

When organizations develop DG plans they often will also undertake some level of Master Data Management (MDM) plan. A simple definition of MDM is that it is a set of processes and tools for consistently defining and managing an organizations data. In particular there is a focus on increasing consistency of “Master Data” such that duplicate data does not reside within the organization and there is a single source of “truth” from stored data.

Your organizations data is one of its greatest assets but managing the processes, people and technology that are responsible for this data requires an actionable plan that promotes data consistency, quality and security while enforcing staff responsibilities and accountability.
