Create Common Information Structures Using Lists Stored in DataStep Hash Objects

The ability of the Version 9 data step hash object to resize the amount of information that can be stored during data step execution opens up a number of opportunities for us to exploit. Significantly it provides a dynamic framework upon which we can mimic the behavior of other common information structures such as array lists, stacks, queues, deques and linked lists. We are able to accomplish this by using the hash object to store list data and implementing custom code to provide list functionality. This paper provides a brief introduction to lists followed by a series of discussions and example code for implementing several common information structures.
